Two feature length works 'Journey' and Beach' screened at Federation Square, Melbourne this week as part of the conclusion of 'Filmic Memorials (2005-2025). The project examined place and domestic cinema through reconstructions as long-duration video art.
A collection of twenty feature length video artworks comprised of vintage home movies that were filmed in Standard 8mm film throughout Germany, Netherlands, UK, USA, the Pacific, Guam, and Australia between 1956-1986 by my grandfather Tony Barbone and in Super 8mm film throughout Victoria, Australia by my father Peter Wilson between 1974-1988.
The project produced video artworks of these journeys by exploring the relationship of place as a central character to and within the films asking how can a topographical analysis of place be situated within the films and their reconstructed other?
